How much buying power can RM1 afford you with? Had this question been posed decades prior, our parents may regale us of tales where RM1 could buy you a full bowl of hot noodles or a generous serving of nasi campur. But with the cost of living having skyrocketed exorbitantly in recent years, it’s hard to imagine how far a single Ringgit could stretch.
Man sells nasi lemak at only RM1 per packet
However, one local vendor has endeavoured to continue providing a decently-sized meal for those looking to make the most out of their Ringgit. Meet Twitter user and entrepreneur @FazrieHaiqal_, who recently took to sharing some thoughts on his business of selling packets of nasi lemak for a paltry sum of RM1. He started off by addressing one of the most common questions he has received since beginning his venture: ‘Are you earning anything by selling your nasi lemak at RM1?’
Explaining that he had started his business with the goal of helping to ease the lives of others, he points out that most meals on average these days could cost upwards of RM10 per person.
“Not everyone can afford that, right?” he said.
While he doesn’t earn a lot, he feels fulfilled by his work
In which case, it occurred to him that he could try selling packets of nasi lemak for RM1, which would provide his customers with an affordable and accessible meal, as and when they need it.
“If we talk about profits, obviously I’m not earning a lot. But for me as a business owner, as long as I’m happy with what I’m doing, I’m content. If others are happy, I’m happy.” he adds.
Drawing up an example, Fazrie said that he often thinks about young students and how expensive meals have become in school cafeterias.
“With RM1 packets of nasi lemak, at least I’ll know that these students won’t have to go hungry. What’s more, not every student can afford to spend that much.” he notes.
His Tweet has since gone viral across social media, with many netizens commending him for providing affordable meals to those who need it the most.
According to Fazrie, his stall is located around the Desa Coalfields area of Sungai Buloh.
