To the surprise of many Malaysians, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yakob has announced today that those living across the Klang Valley will be able to enjoy free rides on the Rapid KL bus service, LRT, MRT, BRT, and Monorail for a month starting from today (16th June 2022). The initiative was part of the launch of the Putrajaya MRT’s first phase, which will formally begin operations at 3pm this afternoon.

And while that may be great news for those who commute on public transport daily, the fact remains that the reliability of these services continue to remain in question given the repeated instances of service delays, interruptions, and outright break-downs that have occurred in the past number of months. Unfortunately, this is a trend that appears to be set to continue after commuters have reported that they have experienced yet another round of service disruptions on the Kelana Jaya LRT line yesterday (15th June 2022).
Crowds seen dangerously waiting near escalator landing
In a Tweet that was shared by netizen @bukhrin, delays in the arrival of trains during peak hours had caused a large crowd to form at the Pasar Seni LRT station, leading all the way out towards an escalator landing. The chaos was only further exacerbated with more commuters taking the escalator up, only to find themselves having to push and squeeze against other passengers who were waiting in line.
“Those who have reached the top of the escalator would crash into those who are already waiting at the landing. What is this, @AskRapidKL? Are you waiting on someone to get hurt?” the netizen asked.

This was echoed by a video shared by netizen @xxjvadeexx on the Twitter thread, showing the Pasar Seni station packed with passengers. In a separate video by the same user, a RapidKL employee could be seen directing commuters to form two lines in an orderly fashion to wait for the next train.

Since then, RapidKL has issued an apology over the situation, and vows to raise the netizen’s concerns to the relevant parties in order to further improve on crowd control at the station.

However, other netizens have pointed out that this isn’t the first time that such scenes have been witnessed at LRT stations.
