“What’s the point of getting a degree?” Devastated woman in China sends out 825 resumes, only receives 30 replies

As children growing up, most of us would been raised by our parents to study hard and make the most out of our education, so that when we come of age as grown adults, we will be able to find our place in society with a career. But with an increasingly competitive job environment that witnesses thousands of capable graduates vying for limited vacancies, landing a job today may require more than just a solid education.

5 days ago, a 22-year-old woman from Hunan, China has taken to sharing her heartbreak on the popular video platform Douyin and aired her grouses regarding the difficulties she has faced in finding herself gainful employment as a fresh graduate. Speaking through tears, she explained that she had sent out a whopping 825 resumes to various companies in hopes of landing an interview.

But to her dismay, out of that large number of resumes, all she received were 30 responses.

“I went for interviews and most of them had internship opportunities which I didn’t mind taking, but they don’t pay their interns and the chance of me transitioning into full time is also unavailable”, she said.

Speaking on her academic background, the woman said she was pursuing her studies in the field of copywriting and her tertiary education has given her plenty of opportunities to take up other subjects to improve her social skills. However, owing to the vast variety of different subjects her studies provided her with, she describes herself as being a jack of all trades, but a master of none.

What’s more, a big contributor of her stress comes from her parents and relatives who would incessantly pester her about getting a job.

“They would keep asking me if I’ve gotten a job that pays well or if I’ve gotten a decent job since I graduated with a degree”,

While she understood that they mean well, their constant chiding has led to a her feeling a heavy burden, owing to the fact that despite her best efforts, she has been unable to secure a job. This is only further worsened by how younger graduates achieving better results in the working world have shattered her perspective of needing a tertiary education.

“I always thought having a degree meant I was special, but what I’m going through has shown how I’m not as special as I thought”,

She then ended her video saying that she doesn’t regret getting a degree, but she can’t help but feel devastated as she has to wake up every day and wonder if she’ll ever find a job that’s suitable for her.
