As of late, VIP convoys have come under intense scrutiny after a number of repeated incidents saw emergency vehicles being brought to a stop and instructed to give way for official envoys to pass on major highways. Many netizens have taken to pointing out the fact that every second a patient spends in an emergency vehicle could mean all the difference between life and death, while criticising the apparent double-standards that exist.
Uncle Kentang’s emergency ambulance encounters DYMM Sultan of Selangor’s motorcade
This time however, things took a much more heartwarming turn after famed local philanthropist Uncle Kentang expressed his gratitude to the police convoy assigned to DYMM Sultan Selangor’s convoy, after a number of their men had decided to separate from the official fleet in order to help escort his ambulance to its destination.

In a recent Facebook post, Uncle Kentang, otherwise known as Mr Kuan Chee Heng, said that one of his private-hire ambulances had been en-route to the National Heart Institute (IJN) when they had encountered DYMM Sultan Selangor’s motorcade on the highway. As is protocol, his ambulance immediately slowed down before veering to the left in order to make way for the fleet to pass.
Outriders from the convoy escorted them all the way to IJN
Much to their surprise, one of the outriders assigned to DYMM Sultan Selangor’s convoy approached the ambulance from the right, before instructing it to move on ahead and follow after two other outriders. The group of three police motorcycles then escorted the ambulance all the way from the Jalan Semantan intersection to Jalan Parliamen, easing the journey ahead for the ambulance.
“The motorcade did not delay the ambulance’s journey, but in fact, allowed it to move more easily amid the traffic jams on the highway earlier that morning.” he adds.
According to the Selangor Royal Office, DYMM Sultan Selangor had been en-route to Istana Negara at the time.
As one can come to expect, the stark difference in approach when encountering emergency vehicles by the Sultan of Selangor’s motorcade has earned resounding praise from netizens.
“Daulat Tuanku! An Agong who stands with the people and cares for His subjects. Respect, PDRM.”
“If it had been a VIP or politician who was on the same road, that patient would have died as a result of the ambulance being forced to give way. Alhamdulillah, we have a Tuanku Agong who is compassionate and wise. Daulat Tuanku.”
“This is what should happen, give way to an ambulance in the process of transporting a patient. Because every second is precious when it comes down to saving the life of a patient. Anyone who has ever been in an ambulance during times of emergency will surely understand.”
