The public transport system in Malaysia, especially across the Klang Valley, has left little to be desired for among daily commuters who have had to endure service delays and interruptions, if not outright breakdowns. And this is in spite of their best efforts to avoid congestion on the road by opting not to drive.
Unfortunately, commuters on the Ampang LRT line are now set to face disruptions further into the year up until September as key repair works are being carried out along it to ensure its continued safety in operation.
Transport Minister announces disruption along Ampang LRT due to repair works
Quoting incumbent Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke, local news agency FMT reports that the disruptions are set to continue between both the Bandaraya and Masjid Jamek stations.
During a press conference that was held in Parliament earlier today, he attributes the disruptions to repair works being conducted in March on the viaduct and pier structure of the Bandaraya LRT station, after damage was found.
“Repair work that is required will take about 7 months to complete and unfortunately disruptions are inevitable”, said Loke.
Following his statement, Loke revealed that repair works will take longer than expected as investigations carried out on the structures indicated critical safety risks that had to be addressed. It is likely that the damage sustained by the structure was caused by ground movement from a proposed hotel site located nearby the station.
“We are considering taking legal action against the developer who allowed for the construction to happen without consulting the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD)”, he adds.
For the time being, the government will have to fork out the cost of repairs being carried out on the line, as they will not be able to wait on the compensations to be disbursed from litigation.
Loke shared that the disruptions would affect most of the Bandaraya and Masjid Jamek stations but users can opt for alternative transportation services that have been provided since January 27th.
What’s more, he suggested commuters to consider taking the soon-to-be opened Putrajaya MRT line to access the city centre using alternative passages through interchange stations such as Chan Sow Lin, Titiwangsa, and Sungai Besi.
He also apologised to commuters for the inconvenience brought on by the LRT service disruption.
