It’s safe to say that the steadily increasing cost of living in Malaysia has set a heavy burden on the minds of most people. With the global economy predicted to enter an imminent recession, compounded by a period of lethargic recovery post-Covid and ongoing supply chain disruptions, many have been left with no choice but to find new ways to tighten their belts and make every Ringgit stretch even further than before.
Penang petrol station offers free nasi lemak and coffee to patrons
This is especially true of dining out, with most eateries being left with no choice but to raise the prices of their menu items in the face of increased operating costs. But for those who are looking for a meal on a budget, one local netizen shares how she recently came across a local petrol station that may just offer a truly cost-effective option.
In a post uploaded by user @piqalee to her Twitter account, she shows how the Petron station located near her office decided to take it upon themselves to alleviate the cost of getting a decent meal for everyday Malaysians with an unexpectedly generous and kind initiative.
A table had been set-up by the petrol station’s management just outside the entrance leading into its kiosk, where one could see that they were offering not just cups of coffee from a beverage dispenser, but even packets of nasi lemak, completely for free!
“Not that important, but there’s one Petron near my office that provide free nasi lemak and coffee every morning. After I noticed this, I never fueled up my car at other stations,” she wrote.
In speaking with Wau Post, she shares that the Petron station is located in the Permatang Batu area.
An ongoing initiative by Petron
The kind gesture has not gone unnoticed by local netizens, many of whom were quick to praise the petrol station for their generosity. Many have also shared positive experiences that they’ve had while refuelling at Petron.
“The other day I got free mandarin oranges and bandung drinks at Petron TTDI.”
“Petron has always offered free nasi lemak and such, every morning when I refuel my car, I would head to the counter to pay for bread. But the Petron staff would always give me a free pack of nasi lemak. I would pretend to be shocked, hahaha. Long live Petron!”
As it turns out, the initiative was part of the company’s Wonderful Wednesday program, as explained in a Tweet in response to Piqa’s post.
We hope more Malaysian companies will take up similar efforts to help everyday Malaysians!
