Regardless of your choice in occupation or social station in life, we should always be mindful and remember never to belittle anybody else for their own chosen line of work, if they’re making an honest living through it. After all as the saying goes, one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
Unfortunately, that axiom is apparently not one shared by most people, after local hawker Everlyn Ong took to sharing one recent experience of how one of her sons had been belittled by a customer while they were working at his burger stall, HeyBroger.
Woman overhears customer belittling her son for being selling burgers
Speaking to Wau Post, Mrs. Everlyn shared that she is a single mother who has 2 sons. Given the fact that they only have a single stream of income from her business, both of her sons have been helping her out at work since they were children.
Fast forward to the present, and her youngest son now operates a hawker stall of his own that sells burgers at different night markets in Penang. On the other haand, Mrs. Ong herself is selling popcorn for a living and her stall is located right next to her son’s.
“Whenever I see him being too busy, I would walk over and help him out at his stall”, she said.
At the time, she explained in her post that while she was helping her son at his stall, she saw an uncle along with his grandson coming over to buy burgers from them. As the duo were waiting on their orders to be cooked, she overheard how the uncle told his grandson that he should study hard to avoid ending up like them.
“See, this is what happens when you don’t study hard. You’ll have to work these kinds of tough jobs”, said the uncle to his grandson.
They feel no shame as they work hard for their goals
When she heard what the uncle has said to his grandson, she couldn’t help but feel bad for her son, seeing him quietly handing the burger to the uncle before continuing his work. She shared that as they managed to catch a breather, she told her son to not feel bad about the ordeal as he works hard for what he wants.
Everlyn then ended her post saying that she is proud of her son, as he managed to not only make a living for himself, but also able to buy his own car and house.
“I’m proud of both my sons for working hard being able to achieve what they want. It doesn’t matter how other people view us, as long as we don’t lose faith in ourselves and continue trying, you’ll become the best you can be”, she said.
Following her post, many netizens have left words of encouragement for the young man.
“Wow, does the uncle know that the hawkers in the Taiwan night market could earn up to 5 figures a month?”
“This is equivalent to the older generation always telling younger children that if they don’t study, they’ll have to go collect rubbish for a living. I would usually tell my children that without rubbish collectors, there would be rubbish everywhere. No matter which industry you’re in, you should always respect each other.”
“All the best!”
“Selling burgers is also considered as a business.”
“Yes, it’s true that you should study hard so you can earn money, if not you won’t even have money to eat burgers.”
