President of local political party PAS and incumbent Marang Member of Parliament Hadi Awang has said that no party may stop the Opposition coalition from planning to topple the current Unity Government formed by component parties Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Warisan, MUDA, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Hadi Awang: It’s the Opposition’s right to plan to topple the govt
As reported by local newspaper The New Straits Times, Hadi said that the process is considered a normal practice that occurs in democratic countries, and has described politics as being dynamic in nature.
“This is normal in politics. Votes of no confidence, statutory declarations and even defections from among the government’s supporters. These are all normal processes.” he told members of the press in Parliament yesterday (March 6th, 2023).
With aspirations to cinch ahold of Putrajaya in the wake of Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) defeat in the last General Elections, he adds that it was the Opposition’s right to draw up such plans. Hadi’s comments came in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement that it was well within the rights of the PAS leader to ‘plan and dream’ for the fall of the Unity Government.
Agong’s decree not a ‘final say’
What’s more, Hadi shrugged off claims that any attempt to destabilise the ruling government would be seen as going against the wishes of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Pointing to the fact that Malaysia was governed by a Constitutional Monarchy, he said that the Agong’s decree is not a ‘final say’ that can prevent any changes from occurring in a democratic country, reports FMT.
He also claims that rumours of malcontent within certain factions of the Unity Government were indeed true, and that it isn’t ‘impossible’ for the ruling government to see a collapse before completing a full term.
“We can already see signs of discontent among the component (parties) making up this government,”
Separately, he has said that does not take any issue in having Opposition leaders brought to court for corruption charges, as they remain innocent until proven guilty.
Previously in December of last year, Hadi said that there were no plans currently in motion to oust the ruling government before the next General Elections, and that the Opposition will be closely monitoring the government and the people’s response to it.
Then just last week, he cautioned the government and said that they should not pin the responsibility on the Opposition in the event of their collapse.
