After attending multiple agriculture courses organised by the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) and Agriculture Department, Razali Ayeh, aged 48 has mustered up the courage and started growing cash crops in order to sustain him and his family’s livelihood.
Orang Asli farmer uses TikTok & Facebook to promote his sweet potato business
According to local newspaper NST, it was said that Razali was a farmer that owns banana and jackfruit farms several years ago. However, a tragedy has struck upon his farm where all his produces were destroyed by elephants. Years later, he decided to dive into this field again and that’s when he started growing sweet potatoes.
He revealed that after attending the course and starting his new venture, he was able to sell up to 300 kilogrammes of sweet potatoes to the local residents and customers in Kuala Betis, Gua Musang. Taking it up a notch, Razali has also began experimenting with various social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, to help him further promote his sweet potato business.
“Because of the social media platforms, I’m able to garner a wider market for my business”, he said.
When asked about his pricing, Razali shared that he sells his sweet potatoes at RM5 per kilogrammes. As for customers who’d purchase over 10 kilogrammes of sweet potatoes from him, he would offer a RM1 discount per kilogramme, totaling up to RM4 per kilogramme of sweet potatoes.
Other than that, he also offers an experience where customers can head over to his farm to pick their own sweet potatoes! Razali then expressed his gratitude towards Jakoa for reigniting his dampened spirit towards the agriculture field.
We’re glad that Razali has found a new source of income that can help sustain him and his family’s livelihood!
