M’sian shuttlers, Pearly Tan & Thinaah advances into semi-finals in Paris 2024 Olympics

From the legendary Lee Chong Wei to mixed double shuttlers Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon, it’s an undeniable fact that Malaysia produces world class athletes, especially in Badmintons. Participating in the Olympics in Paris 2024, women’s double Pearly Tan and Thinaah have shown incredible sportsmanship, as they smash their way into the semi-finals.

According to local news portal, Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the iconic duo faced Korean shuttlers, Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong during the quarter-final match today. With just 2 games, Pearly and Thinaah were able to defeat their opponent, who were the bronze medalist winners back in Tokyo 2021.

Within 37 minutes, the Malaysian pair managed to smash their way into the semi-finals, with a score of 21-12, 21-13. At the start of the match, the duo were given a huge advantage where they lead the match by a score of 7-0, before the opponent started catching up. After the 11-5 short break, the pair managed to end the first round within 6 minutes, before moving on to the second round.

To no surprise, the intensity increases as their opponents were leading them by a score of 2-0, before being pinned down with a 7-6 score. With their determination, Pearly and Thinaah managed to win the game, thus advancing into the semi-finals.

This marks a historic win for Malaysians as Pearly and Thinaah have become the first Malaysian women doubles to advance into the semi-finals in the Paris Olympics. The pair is set to face world No.1 shuttlers, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan from China, who defeated Bulgarian siblings, Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva with straight games.
