Looking back in hindsight, many of us are likely to remember a period in our adolescent years where we fawned over certain celebrities and their works, sometimes to the point of obsession. Take the Twilight phenomenon for example, which saw many teenaged girls saving up to purchase posters, shirts, and other forms of merchandise from the hit series to showcase their affinity for the show and its characters.
M’sian girl comes home to find all her K-Pop merchandise burnt
And while these are typically innocuous phases that many youngsters will no doubt grow out of when they’re older, one Malaysian father didn’t take too kindly to his daughter’s interests in K-Pop artists. In a recent video that was shared by netizen @cikatienn through her TikTok account, a young girl could be seen returning home to her room, only to discover that all of her collectibles have been burnt by her father.
From posters to albums and even a hand-made journal that she crafted on her own, there was not a single scrap that was spared from her father’s fury after he had confiscated them all without her knowledge before setting fire to them in a heap outside the compound of their home.
The young student was then seen kneeling over a heap of her burnt merchandise, completely distraught. Desperate to save what she could from the ashes, she managed to find a small metal box containing photos of her favourite K-Pop artists, many of which were singed by the heat. It was understood through the video’s captions that the girl’s collectibles were burnt as her father did not like seeing them in her room.
Netizens criticised her father for his actions
As one can expect, the video has since gone viral across social media, with many netizens condemning the father for going to such drastic lengths due to his disapproval of his daughter’s interests, instead of discussing about it with her.
“Back when I was a teenager, we also liked collecting magazines, rock posters, comics, but the only difference is now teenagers enjoy collecting K-Pop merchandise, and suddenly this hobby of collecting has become a wayward habit.”
“JUST WHY. Why would he burn it without concern for his daughter, ya Allah SWT. What a pity, he could have had a slow talk with her if he didn’t like it.”
Other K-Pop fans offered to help replace her collectibles
Thankfully however, other K-Pop enthusiasts who caught wind of the girl’s circumstances have decided to band together and help replace as much of her collection as they could. In a post shared by Twitter user @tteguri_, the young fan was left touched by the gesture and extended her sincere gratitude to those who were willing to chip in.
