M’sian Father and 11yo son arrested after a video of his son driving a car by himself in Klang goes viral

Just a little over a month ago, a pair of siblings were caught taking their mother’s car out for a joy ride. Following the news, local authorities have prompted for parents to be wary and monitor their child closely, as their safety could be in jeopardy. Just over the weekend, news broke out that a 11-year-old kid was caught on camera driving a vehicle on his own.

11yo son drives a car by himself in Klang, gets arrested alongside his father

In the viral video circulating online, a silver Proton Saga was seen driving along Jalan Banting. The vehicle was seen approaching a junction and slowly turned into a compound, before putting the car to a halt, in front a group of boys. Rolling the window down, the group of boys were shocked to see their friend at the driver’s seat and asked if he had a death wish.

The 11-year-old driver was unfazed by his friend’s comments and proceeded to roll his window up and continued driving. As the video made its wave on social media, local authorities were quick to pick up on the issue and according to local newspaper, Berita Harian, the incident took place on June 9, at around 6pm.

Subsequently, the South Klang police chief, ACP Cha Hoong Fong, revealed that the 11-year-old boy, alongside his 49-year-old father has been reprimanded for further investigation and questioning. Other than that, the authorities have also seized the vehicle that the boy was driving in the video as evidence.

Currently, the case is being investigated under Section 39(1) of the Road Transport Act for underage driving and Section 111 for abetment of offences. A fine of not more than RM2,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both and losing the right to drive or getting any driving license, if convicted.

Separately, the case is also being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child neglect, abandonment, or exposing the child in a manner that’s likely to cause the child physical or emotional harm. If found guilty, the individual may face a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for not more than 20 years or both.
