It goes without saying that you shouldn’t be littering your rubbish indiscriminately. Not only is it very much a prosecutable offense, but littering contributes to Malaysia’s already growing environmental challenges that could further put our ecology at risk.
While that may be common knowledge, many have elected to ignore it in favour of convenience, such as one student who was witnessed dumping his trash into a river.
19-year-old student caught throwing rubbish into the river located in Sunway
As reported by local newspaper Sinar Harian, the student who wore a blue jersey was seen driving a red Perodua Ativa that stopped on a bridge over Sungai Penanga in the Bandar Sunway area.
Alighting from his car, he proceeded to open up his boot to reveal a plastic bag allegedly containing rubbish that he removed.
Following that, he threw the bag into the river and later on drove off. The entire ordeal was caught on camera, before being widely circulated around social media. The said incident was said to have allegedly happened on Friday, February 10 and in a turn of events, the 19-year-old student has since turned himself to the police.
According to Subang Jaya Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat, investigations into the case were ongoing and they’ve found out from the student that the plastic bag of rubbish he threw contained of Indian delicacies like ladoo and barfi, which are usually pastries made for prayer offerings.
“The case is currently being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (Rule 52 LN 166/59) for disposing any items out from a vehicle, which may land the 19-year-old a fine of up to RM300”, he said.
Netizens have since condemned the young man for lacking the good sense to properly dispose his rubbish, and choosing instead to pollute the river.
“He should be suspended from his studies and sent back to primary school so he can learn basic civil duties.”
“It’s 2023 already. Yet, there are still people like this.”
“You should find a rubbish bin and not a river when you want to discard trash. Such a third world mentality.”
Hopefully this will serve as a reminder for the young man to be more considerate of his surroundings in the future. As always, it’s our shared duty to protect our environment for generations to come.
