Relationships should always be built upon mutual love, trust, and of course above all else, consent. It should go without saying that one should never resort to coercive tactics, should their advances be rejected, and learn instead to take things in stride and move on with life.
Only, this was far from the case for one woman, who fell victim to the disturbing obsession that one man had over her.
Man from China stalks woman he met after going on a date
As reported by British newspaper The Daily Mail, Kaichen Ma, a 21-year-old student from China, grew obsessed over a Muslim woman he had met after going on a date with her. According to prosecutor Matthew Bean, the pair had allegedly met at a nightclub back in September 30th of last year and exchanged contacts, before deciding to go out together.
At the time, they visited a Turkish restaurant for dinner and went to the cinema. But as he was walking her home from their meal, he allegedly tried to kiss and touch her arm.
The woman tried explaining to him that he was being too forward and told him that she was not interested in pursuing a relationship with him, but Kaichen wouldn’t take no for an answer and remained insistent. Despite blocking his number, the man would use as many as 44 different numbers in order to contact the victim.
Harassed her repeatedly despite being rejected
What’s more, he would even show up uninvited at lectures held in Durham University, where the victim studied, in hopes of catching a glimpse of her. This would follow with unwanted gifts such as a Pandora ring, cards, and even a plane ticket back to his native China, all which he addressed to the ‘love of my life’.
But upon facing repeated rejections, he started sending prejudicial messages to the 21-year-old woman about her Muslim faith concerning the Armenian genocide, and even went so far as to mail her a kilo of pork.
Understandably caught in fear over the man’s obsessive actions, the victim suffered from a mental breakdown and dared not to leave her student accommodations unattended, lest she bump into him. This would cause her to miss two weeks of classes.
Kaichen was later detained in December 1st of last year on charges of stalking and attempting to pervert the course of justice, both of which he admitted to. He was subsequently released on bail on the condition that he would not contact the victim again.
Yet, he ignored his bail condition and continued to stalk her, asking that she withdraw the criminal proceedings against him for harassment. He even tried to strike a bargain with her and suggested that they became ‘casual friends with benefits’, to no avail. Kaichen also offered to pay her a month’s worth of his own salary when he started work in hopes of convincing her to drop the case.
When none of it worked, he threatened to commit suicide if the victim turned him in to the authorities.
Kaichen was later arrested for a second time on January 30th this year when he approached her on the street in Durham, when she attempted to resume her studies, and has remained under police custody since.
For his offenses, Judge James Adkin has sentenced Kaichen to a 28-month prison sentence, half of which he would have to serve behind bars before being deported back to his country of origin. A 15-year restraining order was also imposed upon him, which forbids the man from ever coming into contact with the victim in that period.
Consequently, the victim said that the stalking has left her to suffer from breakdowns, and that she would feel physically sick on a nightly basis. She is also afraid of leaving her room, and has been struggling to sleep.
