After close to a decade of not using an Android phone, I’ve finally made the choice to switch over and try out the brand-new Samsung A54 5G over the past weekend, courtesy of Samsung Malaysia.

As per any typical phone, the phone came in a sleek box that consists of the ejection pin, warranty card, Samsung Pay leaflet and the USB-C to USB-C cable. The phone actually comes in 4 colours which are white, lime, violet and black but as someone who always chose black, I decided to do something different and go with white.

While it may be marketed as a mid-range device for the masses, it certainly didn’t feel that way in the hand when I unboxed it! The device runs on Android 13 with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 overlay, and the company promises that the Galaxy A54 5G will receive four years of Android support and five years of security updates.

One thing that I noticed from the Samsung phone is that upon setting up, you’re allowed to choose how to unlock your phone with biometrics that includes your fingerprint or the facial recognition, which I enjoyed especially coming from an iPhone 11 that only has facial recognition as standard.

The phone has a glossy finish at the back giving it an elegant and sleek look, but there is a downside as it’s prone to fingerprint marks if you decide to use it without a case. However, a personal observation with my white phone shows that the fingerprint marks aren’t as obvious, which is a plus point for me!

Just like most Malaysians, hunting for food is a staple for me and I couldn’t find a better way to test out the camera quality by capturing pictures of food I’ve devoured. The phone features a triple rear camera array consisting of a 48MP main camera, 12MP front camera, 8MP wide camera and 5MP macro camera. Rest assured I was amazed at how well the phone camera can pick up lighting, making my food look more delectable than ever.

Details were crisp under good lighting, with the colours appearing to be a little more saturated than real life. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing as I quite enjoyed the way they made my photos ‘pop’.

From setting up to downloading apps on the phone, I was thoroughly impressed at how smooth the process has been, especially when you consider that this is a mid-range device running with an middle-of-the-road Exynos 1380 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM. And thanks to its 6.6-inch FHD+ with Super AMOLED screen paired with their Vision Booster, binging my favourite shows on it was an absolute delight.

When it comes to battery life, I’m genuinely impressed that even after watching a movie that was about an hour and a half long at full brightness and high volume, my battery life went only from 67% to 57%. Charging time was also relatively fast taking less than an hour to go from 13% to 99%.

All in all, I’d say that this is one of the best transitions I’ve made, and I can’t wait to explore more of the Android world with this phone! At less than RM2,000, the Samsung A54 5G definitely punches above its weight, whether it be in terms of display, camera, performance, or battery-life.
