“I need to take care of my mum “, Dedicated M’sian teacher travels up to 168km a day to work

Teachers possess one of the most important roles in our society as they help nurture our younger generation. With that said, becoming an educator requires patience, resilience, and dedication. Embodying these qualities perfectly, is a teacher named Intan who travels up to 168km daily, to nurture the children.

Dedicated M’sian teacher travels up to 168km a day to work

Working as a government teacher, Intan is a new teacher who was posted to a local school in Kuala Kangsar. Living in Kinta Selatan, she would commute up to 168km daily, just so she could teach at her school. Starting her day at 4:35am, she would begin prepping her breakfast and lunch boxes, before heading out.

Departing at around 5:30am, she would then head to a petrol station that’s about 30 minutes away to perform her morning prayers and fill up her gas tank. Reaching her workplace at 6:48am, she would take a few minutes to catch her breath before working on her lesson plans and attending the assembly.

Speaking to Wau Post, Intan shared that she’s been traveling 168km daily for close to a year. When asked if she intends to move closer or transfer schools, she revealed that she would eventually apply for a transfer soon.

“I can’t leave home because I’m taking care of my mother”, she answered, sharing that her mother is still recovering from the grief she experienced when her dad passed.

“When I see my students progress, I know it’s worth it”

Having so much passion for her work, Intan who teaches English and ASK said that that she finds joy when she is able to witness her students’ progress academically. However, it’s not always rainbows and sunshine for the dedicated teacher. Sharing some of her struggles, Intan mentioned that the hardest part about her job, is finding the right balance when teaching her students.

“Every student has different learning capabilities, and I would have to weigh my options to see which approach would be the best for them”, she said.

Despite the challenges faced, Intan is still passionate and dedicated to her role as an educator. To aspiring teachers out there, Intan advised that they should always have an open heart by being adaptive and have patience.

“You are stepping into one of the most impactful professions in the world”, she said, adding that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about inspiring, nurturing, and guiding the next generation.
