Weddings are typically lavish affairs, where couples and their families are willing to pull out all the stops to ensure that the occasion would be nothing short of perfect, while creating memories to last a lifetime. In fact, some lovebirds have even gone so far as to break the bank and plunge themselves into debt for the sake of the picture-perfect wedding reception and ceremony, landing themselves in a less-than-enviable position with their personal finances.
M’sian couple spend less than RM1,000 on their wedding
But one Malaysian couple opted to do things a little differently, and commemorated their union together through a modest ceremony that costed them less than RM1,000! As shared by Twitter user @wydsetan, otherwise known as Ms Nur Ashiekin, she recounted how they managed to pull off the feat on such a small budget on their special day.
Instead of renting out a large community hall or a ballroom at a hotel and hiring a wedding planner for the purpose, which can run in the tens of thousands of Ringgit, Nur Ashiekin said they decided to get married and have their wedding photos taken at the Central Melaka District Religious Office on March 3rd, 2023, as the venue already came complete with a decorated wedding dais (pelamin).
Doing her makeup on her own, she then enlisted the help of a friend to help them photograph their wedding photos using a smartphone camera. And adding to that, she even decided to wear clothes she already owned instead of buying a brand-new wedding ensemble to save on costs.
As for the reception itself, her husband’s family offered to help cater the affair by preparing a simple meal of white rice and asam pedas dishes for guests who were celebrating with them, according to mStar.
In total, they spent around RM800 for their special day together. RM380 went towards registering their marriage, hiring an imam, as well as witness fees at the religious office. RM200 was spent on catering, with help from her in-laws.
As for the intricate henna design that she wore on her wedding day, Nur Ashiekin said she only spent RM55 to have an artist paint it on. The remainder of the money went towards their wedding rings, and buying clothes that would last.
Wanted to save for their future together
In speaking with Wau Post, she explained that her decision to have a modest wedding with her husband was prompted by her upbringing, and that she also wanted to put more money towards saving for their future in building a family together as a couple.
“I am the oldest of 9 siblings and I know how to be independent. Saving money is not that easy.
I didn’t want to spend so much money only for one day.” she said.
When asked about how her own family and in-laws reacted to her decision, she said that they respected it and were happy to accommodate with her arrangements.
“In my opinion, when you get married you need to learn more about understanding each other day by day. It’s not just about the money only.
If you just focus on money, you can’t have happiness but if you understand each other, manage your finances and everything else together, it will work.” she adds.
Here’s to wishing the happy couple many, many years of marital bliss ahead!
