Watching your loved ones suffer from an illness is arguably one of the worst feelings ever because there’s really not much that can be done on our end than to try and ease their pain. Just recently, a woman named Rohayu Salleh has found herself in the receiving end of care, after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.
Hearing & speaking impaired M’sian takes on role as caregiver to sibling with colon cancer
According to local newspaper NST, a pair of siblings have been looking after each other for the past 2 decades after their mother’s passing and their father’s decision to remarry after. Rohayu Salleh was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and her sister who suffers from hearing and speaking disabilities has taken up the role as her caregiver.
The pair now resides in their relative’s home in Taman Kebun Villa, Bukit Pinang and this living arrangement came about because it allows easier transportation to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), for Rohayu’s treatment. Following her diagnosis, the treatments that she has to undergo has rendered her the ability to walk or care for her own needs.
Rohayu is unable to conduct any form of activity without her sister’s assistance and this is truly devastating turn of events as compared to their previous lives, where they resided in Kampung Baru Nami, Sik, where they ran a cake selling business to help sustain their livelihoods and support their brothers.
“My sister has to take care of me now despite her own challenges and we communicate through sign language”, she said.
Since her diagnosis, Rohayu revealed that she has solely been depending on the RM450 from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), that her sister receives to cover the costs for her necessities like formula milk and hospital visits. Unfortunately, as the prices for her formula milk are costly, it has forced her to ration her consumption.
However, despite the trials and turbulence that Rohayu has to go through, she revealed that her desire to regain strength and continue her business so she could generate some income to support her medical treatments. Zuraini Kamal, Chairman of Cancer Survivors Malaysia (CSM) has made a visit to Rohayu, providing her with some necessities including a patient bed, formula milk, and kitchen essentials.
