Fire breaks out at Ministry of Finance HQ refuse room, no injuries or causalities reported

A small fire has reportedly broke out at the Ministry of Finance’s headquarters, located in Putrajaya. According to local news outlet Free Malaysia Today, the incident took place yesterday (December 6th, 2022) afternoon, at around 2.30pm. Photos of the incident circulating online appear to show a part of the building on street level engulfed in thick smoke, with emergency personnel arriving on-site to attend to the fire.

Quoting the Ministry of Finance, news outlet The Edge Markets reports that the blaze had started at a refuse storage area located at the ground floor of the complex’s North Block. The Precinct 7 Fire and Rescue Station would later receive an emergency call sometime around 2.34pm, before three fire engines were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived at 2.41pm, said station deputy chief M Surass.

Thankfully while waiting on the emergency responders to arrive, building staff had managed to keep the fire under control and prevented it from spreading. Firefighters then assumed control of the site and successfully put the flames out completely. The operation was declared complete nearly an hour later at 3.39pm. No injuries or causalities were reported.

At this point in time, the cause of the fire is still yet to be determined. However according to investigation findings, Putrajaya OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said that they believe that it could have been started by sparks from renovation works that ignited a pile of papers at the dumpsite, as quoted by The Star.

With that said, Utusan Malaysia reports that the Ministry is still awaiting findings from the official report from the Putrajaya Fire and Rescue services to identify the root cause of the blaze, as well as the estimated cost of losses sustained.
