Living with a disability is definitely difficult but there are many individuals who have proved to society that their disability does not define who they are and what they will become. This is apparent in a Sarawakian lad, Imenwell Ishak, where he was able to overcome his disability and pursue his bright future ahead of him.

Diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 16, Imenwell Isak persevered and scored a 3.5 CGPA in his STPM

Suffering from visual impairment, Imenwell managed to overcome his challenges and scored a whopping 3.5 CGPA in his STPM examination. Diagnosed with glaucoma at 16, Imenwell said that he sought for treatment a little late as there were no glaring symptoms, sharing that he would occasionally suffer from vision blurs but didn’t think it was anything serious until the condition deteriorated.

When asked about his preparations for the exam, Imenwell admitted that it was a difficult process as his visual impairment has require him to use a text-to-speech device. His father revealed that the text-to-speech device costs RM2,000 in the market and it originated from Korea.

According to local newspaper The Borneo Post, he has a clear vision for his future as he hopes to become a teacher in the near future.

“I want to be able to serve the community, providing motivation and support especially to those who are physically disabled”, he said.

Speaking to The Borneo Post, the SMK Matang Jaya student is hoping to further his studies in University Malaya as he was made aware that the said university provides facilities that accommodate the OKU community, including those who suffer from visual impairment.
