One of the greatest things about Malaysia is the fact that most Malaysians can speak up to two languages! Just recently, a woman on a business trip to Malaysia from China was surprised to find that her e-hailing driver can speak Mandarin!
China girl in M’sia surprised that her e-hailing driver can speak in Mandarin
According to a post on XiaoHongShu, a woman from China was trying to communicate with her e-hailing driver using English. However, they soon hit a language barrier as the woman wasn’t very fluent in English. In the video posted, the driver asked if she liked any artists to which she answered saying that she likes to draw.
The driver couldn’t understand her initially and out of panic, she blurted out in mandarin saying she likes to draw. After a few seconds, the driver then quickly started speaking in Mandarin, taking the girl by surprise. As they conversed in Mandarin, the woman couldn’t help but applaud the man for being able to speak Mandarin well.
As he asked her what she was doing here in Malaysia, she answered saying that she had just graduated and is now here for a business trip. He asked her what he majored in her university and to his surprise, she said Bahasa Melayu.
Stuns e-hailing driver with BM instead
When the driver realised that she could speak Bahasa Melayu, he was shocked as he didn’t expect someone from China to be able to speak BM fluently. They then proceeded to communicate with each other using a mixture of three languages, and the e-hailing driver remains very impressed of the woman’s ability to pick up multiple languages.
Speaking to Wau Post, the woman shared that there are six to ten universities in China that is equipped with courses to teach students BM. From there, she has started learning the language four years ago and found it to be an interesting language to learn.
It’s definitely great to see how despite the initial hiccup both the driver and the woman were able to learn from each other!
