Just yesterday, news broke out that a cargo ship sank and overturned near Pulau Burung, Sebuyau. Subsequently, a statement was released by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) regarding the incident. According to a spokesperson from the MMEA in Sarawak, he revealed that the tragic event has caused nine crew members to go missing.

Following the news, local newspaper NST reports that MMEA’s patrol boat, KM Kota Kinabalu, is already on-site, conducting search and rescue (SAR) operations. In addition to that, the Royal Malaysia’s Air Operations Force was also called to help with the rescue mission.
Other efforts from the MMEA would include deploying the fast response vessel “Kilat,” to assist the rescue mission. When asked about the incident, NST reports that the incident was brought to light when the owner of the cargo ship made a distress call to MMEA.
According to The Borneo Post, the nine crew members that are currently missing have been identified with four of them being Malaysians, another four members with Myanmar nationals and one Indonesian. All nine missing members were reported to be men aged between 20 to 52.
“The search is still ongoing, and efforts are being made to thoroughly search for the missing members”, said the statement. As of 4pm yesterday, there has yet to be any new updates or leads regarding the missing crew members.
