Batu Caves ranked as the world’s 10th most physically demanding tourist landmark!

Batu Caves is a popular tourist destination known for its religious attributes to the Hindu community. Every year, Batu Caves becomes the focal point for the Thaipusam festival, which attracts thousands of devotees and tourists. Just recently, an article published by PureGym reported that the famous limestone cave located in Gombak, Selangor has been named as the world’s 10th most physically demanding tourist landmark!

Revealing the world’s top 25 landmarks that are actually physically demanding, the team in PureGym has taken into different factors such as number of steps required to experience the landmark to its fullest, the elevation change during the ascent of the landmark, and the average temperature of the location.

Based on the three factors listed above, an index with a score of 100 is created to measure each landmark that are deemed as physically demanding. With that said, the higher the index score for each landmark, the more physically exertion it requires.

Looking at the list for ourselves, ranking first in the list is The Flørli Stairs in Norway. Looking at the statistics, the number of stairs recorded came up to 4,444 steps, with an elevation change of 750 and the average temperature of 11.5 degrees racking up the index score to 76 out of 100.

Following closely is the Manitou Incline in the United States and the Poenari Castle in Romania scoring 63 and 58 respectively. Ranking 10th in the list, is none other than the famous limestone cave in Gombak Selangor. With 272 steps, an elevation change of 100 and an average temperature of 32.4 degrees, Batu Caves have obtained a score of 40 out of 100!

Other famous landmarks in the list includes:

  • Konpira-san Shrine, Japan
  • Arthur’s Seat, Scotland
  • Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
  • Park Guell, Spain
  • Petra Monastery, Jordan
  • Castle of the Moors, Portugal

While Batu Caves may be physically demanding to reach the top, there has been news reporting that an escalator would be built to help those who are physically disabled but is keen on visiting the temple.
