Having your basic needs met is definitely something that many take for granted. Just recently, a political figure from Miri, Chiew Choon Man has shared a touching story of a woman who finally regained her spirit in life after being able to sell Nasi Lemak to sustain her family’s livelihood.
M’sian woman sells Nasi Lemak to sustain her family’s livelihood
According to a post by Chiew Choon Man, he shared that he’s been receiving messages about a woman who has to take care of 7 children. As he made his way to her home, he was shocked to find out the condition of their house.
“The roof had holes in them, meaning they’d get wet if it rains”, he said.
As he spoke to the woman, he found out that she has 7 kids with her ex-husband. Just last year, she married her current husband where she gave birth to 2 children. Unfortunately, her husband hasn’t been feeling well, leading him to not be able to work. With Kak Wati heading out to earn a living, her husband has no choice but to stay home and take care of their kids.
Speaking to Chiew, Kak Wati shared that as she only gets RM20 a day, she is left with no choice but to head to restaurants when they close to ask for some leftover food or chicken bones.
“I ask them for chicken bones so I can make soup and feed my children”, she said.
Determined to help her
Feeling determined to help change Kak Wati and her family’s fate, Chiew asked her what she thinks she’s good at, to which she replied saying that she’s good at cooking Nasi Lemak. Without any hesitation, he brought her to a local supermarket where they purchased everything, she needed to start a small business by the roadside.
“I spent about RM6,000 for some electrical appliances for her and food that could last their family for 2 months”, adding that he gave them another extra RM2,000 to support their life.
Chiew expressed that he didn’t want to make a one-off donation to the family as it couldn’t help them sustain in the long run. He mentioned that he wanted to fully support them and giving them the ability to look after themselves.
As they were equipped with everything they needed to start her own stall, Kak Wati shared that she woke up at 5am and started preparing the Nasi Lemak. With the help of her children and husband, she was able to pack everything up and head over to where she was going to operate her stall. Thankfully, she was able to sell all her Nasi Lemak, earning a total of RM250.
“I’ve not earned this much money in a single day”, she said tearily.
We hope that Kak Wati is able to continue with her business and hopefully her living condition can change. For those who are in interested in supporting her, Kak Wati operates her stall near Tanah Perkuburan Islam Sg.Baong.
