Get behind the wheel on any stretch of road locally, and chances are you would be familiar with the blaring sirens of a police escort convoy ferrying dignitaries and officials from one engagement to another. Their presence has often been a sore point of debate among Malaysian motorists for quite some time now, especially in light of a number of highly contentious incidents that they have been involved in.
Police vehicles seen driving against traffic
Just recently, a video clip shared by netizen Hamdan Zakaria has caught the attention of local Malaysian netizens across the social media space, after a number of police vehicles were seen driving on the wrong side of the road. In the clip that was shared to community Facebook group DashCam Owners Malaysia, Hamdan could be seen travelling along a twisty road with blind bends.
To his shock, he was then suddenly confronted by the blaring sirens of an oncoming Honda Civic decorated in the Royal Malaysian Police’s livery that could be seen moving against the flow of traffic in what appears to be an attempt at an overtake maneuver. This would then be followed by two flat-bed trucks that can be seen ferrying a luxury car each: a Bentley Mulsanne full-sized luxury sedan in black, and another Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon in grey. The fleet ended with a Ford Ranger pickup truck that also bore the same Royal Malaysian Police livery.
Dashcam driver managed to avoid them in time
Thankfully at the time, there had been just enough room on the road shoulder for Hamdan to maneuver his own car out of the way and onto a grassy patch, thus preventing a potentially life-threatening accident from occurring. What is more concerning is the fact that the incident appears to have occurred on a road marked with double-lines, which indicates that overtaking is not allowed. A driver who is convicted of doing so is liable of being slapped with a RM300 fine.
Alarmed by the arguably reckless driving seen by the police vehicles in the video, netizens have urged him to file a report with the authorities and bring his footage along as evidence.
