Of all the essential grocery items to make it under the limelight as of late, local headlines have been proliferated with the subject of prices where chicken meat and eggs are concerned, especially in light of the recent subsidy changes announced by the federal government. In fact, the issue regarding poultry supply has also dogged our neighbours across the Causeway in Singapore, after Malaysia had temporarily suspended the export of chicken into the island state.

Can’t find chickens? Then just eat eggs, say SG minister

As such, many Singaporeans have understandably grown increasingly concerned over the nation’s imminent food supply crisis, a topic which was recently addressed in a Parliamentary sitting that has since gone somewhat viral for all the wrong reasons. During the session, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu Hai Yien was heard advising Singaporean citizens to remain adaptable to the circumstances at hand.

Drawing upon a strikingly familiar piece of advice, she proceeded to tell them to consider other alternatives to chicken meat if it was not possible to buy it from local markets.

“If you are able again adaptable [sic], if you can’t buy this this week, just don’t eat this form of meat.

If you can’t find chicken, let’s go for other form of meats like eggs.” she said.

“Is she from same batch as M’sia ministers?”

A video clip of her saying so was promptly uploaded onto TikTok by user joshualimkopi, where it has since been thoroughly lambasted by netizens on both sides of the Causeway.

And if this sounds like a sudden moment of deja vu, that’s probably owing to the fact that Melaka Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) director Norena Jaafar had previously advised Malaysians to eat less eggs to battle the steady increase of prices owing to global inflation.
