30yo M’sian colours Batik for a living so he could support his 2 siblings that are still in school

Learning how to colour Batik at the age of 16, Muhammad Fazrul Hakim is adamant in continuing his craft as he is able to not only fine tune his skills, but also support his 2 other sisters who are still in school.

According to local newspaper Harian Metro, Fazrul journey to become a master in colouring Batik started back when he was in primary school. Being the second child out of 5 siblings, Fazrul stasrted helping his mother out with menial tasks, he began to learn the proper techniques to colour Batik from him mother. Despite receiving guidance, Fazrul revealed that it was still a hard skill to master.

“I took a really long time to master the techniques”, he said.

While it is difficult, Fazrul never had the thought of giving up as his skill is able to help him earn a living, as well as his 2 sisters and his mother. Sharing his routine, Fazrul starts work as early as 8am and finishes work around 6pm. During the times he spent at work, Fazrul is able to colour over 4 to 5 Batik cloths daily.

Sharing more about his craft, the man said that the Batik cloths have drawings on them, and his task is to colour them. While he is much more confident in his skills, he shared that struggles are inevitable.

“I have gotten better in terms of my skills, but when it comes to drying the cloths, it would really depend on the weather”, he mentioned.

Drying the cloths would really depend on the weather and during monsoon season, the cloths are harder to dry. When asked if he would consider a different career path, Fazrul shared that he hasn’t had the thought for the time being.

“I’ve been judged for my line of work, but I don’t mind it. As long as I can take care of my family”, he said, adding that his mother has been diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney issues.
