Where fruits are concerned in Malaysia, the durian reigns supreme as the appropriately dubbed, King of Fruits. Consequently as any durian fan can attest to, they usually come at a pretty steep price due to demand and are often considered to be a luxury.
Durian seller sells durians for RM4.99 in line with Menu Rahmah concept
Realising that some families may not be able to afford to enjoy durians due to their prohibitive prices, one durian seller has taken the opportunity to help the community and adopt the government’s ongoing ‘Menu Rahmah’ policy and sell packs of durian for only RM4.99.
For those not in the know, Menu Rahmah refers to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry’s (KPDN) current initiative to work alongside private businesses to provide Malaysians with affordable lunch and dinner meals, as a response to the steadily increasing cost of living experienced across the country.
As reported by local newspaper NST, Khairul Fahmy Md Yasin who operates the Durian Atok fruit store sells packs of durians, each weigh between 200 to 300 grams, so that more people, especially those who may not necessarily be of means, may also be able to enjoy the fruit all the same. Speaking to the newspaper, he believes that the ‘Menu Rahmah’ concept should not be strictly confined to only daily food and beverages.
He thinks that the other store operators should also try and adopt this concept as it can help lessen the burden for the B40 community and allow them the opportunity to enjoy the little things in life. In adopting this concept and lowering the prices of their goods, he points out that this can also be seen as a form of charity to help those who are in need.
After implementing his new prices for over a week, Khairul witnesseda massive spike in terms of sale and shares that his stall has now attracted buyers from as far as Skudai, Johor.
“I didn’t expect that this little change would do so much good to my business. The first day I applied this concept, I managed to sell up to 50 packs of durian in 10 minutes”, he said.
Following that achievement, Khairul adds that his stall had hit yet another milestone yesterday when he sold 600 packs of durian.
Should demand increase, Khairul may potentially increase the supply of his durian packs. But he has since implemented a rule of allowing each customer to only buy 2 packs of his durians to prevent overbuying, allowing others to also have a chance to make their purchase.
As of now, Khairul mentioned that those who are interested in the RM4.99/pack durians would have to physically come to their store as he is not taking any orders.
