Having a place to stay is a basic necessity that many can’t afford. This goes to show how much we take things or granted and should always remain grateful that we are able to afford the basic necessities. Unfortunately for this elderly couple, it seems like their lives took a turn after being kicked out by their landlord.

Just yesterday, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim shared a series of tweets about helping a Malaysian elderly couple who were in need. In his tweets, he mentioned that the elderly couple along with their disabled 35-year-old daughter were living in a rented house in Penang.

After over seven decades of living in the house, Uncle Chu was informed by his landlord that they no longer want to extend their rental contract anymore. Sim then spoke to landlord on behalf of Uncle Chu, saying that he will bear the costs of renovation of the landlord’s house, provided if they allow Uncle Chu and his family to live there but the landlord declined the offer, leaving them with no choice but to move.

“It’s challenging for them emotionally and financially. Uncle Chu’s savings have dried up long ago”, he said.

With the help of state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Steven was able to locate a new house for the family under the state’s housing programme. Following that, Sim then called up Kak Ina, a fellow Malaysian he helped awhile back and asked if she could lend a helping hand.

“I asked how much she would charge to help the family move their items and she said it’s free!”, he exclaimed.

After settling into a new home, Uncle Chu thanked Sim profusely for lending a helping hand and is grateful that this time round, he has found a place that will not kick him and his family out again.
