Malaysian Twist: Calum Scott sings “You are the reason”, with Sarawakian artiste playing the Sape

Malaysia is a country known for its diverse culture. With that said, many natives in Malaysia have their own set of traditions and cultures, including musical instruments. Just recently, a Sarawakian artiste, Anderson Kalang was invited to collaborate with Calum Scott at a local radio station, Fly FM.

Watching the video for ourselves, Anderson Kalang, a Sarawakian artiste was sat next to Calum Scott with a traditional music instrument, Sape. For those who are unfamiliar, Sape is a traditional lute-like string instrument originating from the indigenous communities of Borneo, particularly among the Dayak people of Sarawak, Malaysia. It typically has a long, boat-shaped body with a fretted neck and strings made from nylon.

Sharing that he will be playing the melody of Calum’s famous song “You are the reason”, the mesmerizing tune coming from the Sape has caught the attention of many.

As Calum sings to the accompanied tune, it was clear that the musical instrument has added a unique twist into it. And to no surprise, the soothing sounds of the Sape blends incredibly well with Calum’s amazing voice, creating a perfect rendition of the song,

Towards the end of the song, Calum himself was in disbelief of how incredible the Sape sounds. In the video he said,

“This is unbelievable.”

As the video was uploaded onto TikTok, many netizens have commented on it and here’s what some of them said:

“When the melody comes from the Sape instrument, it’s definitely pleasant. It’s so traditional and expensive.” 

“Sape instrument is the best, I’m from semenanjung but I really love listening to the strums of Sape.”
