If you’ve been scrolling through social media recently, then you will no doubt have come across a new trend in Thailand involving muscular Thai waiters scantily dressed in women’s lingerie, performing saucy dance moves as they serve up your meals. This is especially true of the Staneemeehoi restaurant in Lat Phrao, Bangkok, which has since gained viral fame because of it.
In fact, their troupe of dashing, salacious dancers have proven to be so popular across the Southeast Asian region, they have apparently even been invited to perform for the opening of a local nightclub here in Kuala Lumpur.

That being said, as the news spread, controversy sparked as the event was originally supposed to be held on March 30th. The event was allegedly an opening ceremony with tickets going on sale for RM888. The event was instantly met with heavy criticism, especially from among conservative sectors in the country.
As local newspaper The Star reports, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has voiced his disapproval over the grand opening.
“This is overboard, insensitive, immoral and, in fact, disgusting”, he said, and has urged for DBKL to take action.
This was echoed by the head of PAS’ religious leaders’ council, Ahmad Yahya, who according to Sinar Harian, said that the event should not be held over concerns that it may ‘tarnish’ the sanctity of the Ramadan Holy Month, which begins tomorrow (March 23rd).
UMNO’s Youth Division has also struck out against the event organisers by saying that they will be lodging a police report over the event, reports Astro Awani.
With that said, another report by Sin Chew Daily apparent claims that the dancers were not invited to perform, bur rather only to attend the club’s opening ceremony. Speaking on the controversy, the club’s management said they did not expect for the event to be brought up in such a bad light.
Either way, it would not seem to matter much as to why the Thai dance troupe was invited at all, as the grand opening may not even happen to begin with.
This comes after Azman Abidin, the secretary to the Prime Minister, issued a statement revealing that initial investigations by DBKL indicate that the club in question has yet to obtain any permit for an event. What’s more, further investigations reported that the club’s license has expired since 2021 and that DBKL will be taking them to task over the offenses.
However, the club management has also responded to the allegations and claim that they have the license to fully operate as a restaurant, and the license is still valid until July 2023. As of now, the event that was set on March 30th has been cancelled and the post regarding the event has also been deleted from the club’s social media pages.
A report by Malaysiakini indicates that the cancellation of the event has been attributed to orders by the Royal Malaysian Police, based upon a statement issued by Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah.
