Living with a disability is no easy task, which many of us may not realise. Going one step further, the Malaysian police force came up with an initiative to better understand the plight of our visually impaired community.
In support of M’sia’s blind community, PDRM spends a day in their shoes
Yesterday, the national police force took to the streets of Jalan Thambillay in Brickfields, but it wasn’t just another regular day at work. Teaming up with the blind community, Kuala Lumpur chief of police, Dato’ Mohd Shuhaily bin Mohd Zain, led his team of police officers for a test run in the city.
Posting on their official Facebook page, the initiative was organized to allow a deeper insight into the everyday struggles of visually impaired citizens. Clad in their blue uniform, complete with blindfolds and walking sticks, Dato’ Mohd Suhaily and his squad were seen walking using their equipment and ‘tactiles’ provided on the path.
The actions of the police have earned numerous praise from citizens
Earning a well-deserved nod from the public, the police department’s actions have received nothing short of a positive response. Netizens applauded the initiative and complimented the police for carrying out such good work.
Overall, the exercise revealed the various obstacles to the blind, which the police managed to experience firsthand. “From what I observed on our patrol, there are still many selfish individuals who park their cars in a way that blocks the OKU facilities,” said Dato’ Mohd Suhaily. He continued to implore the public to respect the hardships of the blind and not simply obstruct their access to special amenities.
Hopefully, this eye-opening experience can be a reminder to us all to always be more mindful of those less fortunate than us.
