The story of how a M’sian’s salary increased by a vast amount after learning Japanese
Just recently, according to an Instagram post by Malaysian Pay Gap, a man shared that shortly after his graduation, he landed his first job at a government hospital as an IT support for a RM1.8k salary.
Unfortunately, with the heavy workload and needing to be on call almost 24/7 he decided to leave his first job after a year and jumped to his second job. Following his career progression, the man was able to land a customer support role where he was paid RM3k monthly, subsequently getting a promotion that only increased his salary by RM500.
As he browses through jobs, he discovered that his peers of the same job scope would get a higher salary if they’re able to converse in different languages. Taking that as an advantage, the man shared that he has been learning Japanese on his own for a while and decided to fine tune his skills. He went on and registered for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 test, where he was able to score well.
After being certified, he was able to land his third job, which paid him RM4,800 to RM5,300 monthly after working for two years in an MNC company as an IT help desk staff. Then, he was offered a similar role at a different company where he was given a salary of RM8k, with RM6.4k as his base salary and an extra language allowance for RM1.6k.
Looking back at his career path, he was certain that mastering a language has helped in greatly in terms of his career. Other than that, he gets added perks like watching anime without subtitles and heading over to Japan with no language barrier.
It’s great to see how learning a new language worked out for him!
