Parenting can often times come with many hurdles and challenges, from misbehaving children to lackluster grades. And in highly competitive countries such as Japan, South Korea and China, the latter has driven many parents to go truly above and beyond to ensure that their kids do not fall behind academically.
Father in China spends 1 year tutoring his son maths daily
In the case of one father hailing from Zhengzhou city in Henan province of China, Mainland Chinese news outlet Qilu Evening News reported that he was so committed to see his son ace his examinations, he took time every day out of his own schedule to personally tutor the boy mathematics.
Staying up late into the night, the duo would go over revision books together, as the boy’s father expressed concerns over his wildly varied examination results. According to Taiwanese news portal ET Today, the child would score anywhere between 40 to 50 marks, up to 80 to 90 marks.
Son only managed to score 6/100 for his maths test
However much to his chagrin and dismay, the boy eventually brought his report card home and revealed that instead of passing by a hair, he managed to score only a paltry 6 marks out of a possible 100. Shocked by the results, the man could then be seen breaking down into tears and dabbing them away with a towel while his wife filmed his reaction.
“I don’t care anymore. All my efforts were wasted in vain. Let him struggle on his own.” he said in dismay.
Netizens have divided opinions
The video has since gone viral across Chinese social media, with many netizens being left amused by his dramatic reaction.
“6 marks is a bit much!”
“This is how teachers feel! Only those who have taught children will understand the sentiment.”
However, some have pointed out that it was unlikely that the child had scored 6 marks, unless he had intentionally submitted a blank examination paper as an act of rebellion against his father.
“This is obviously an act of rebellion. He did it on purpose. There’s no way that he could have scored only 6 marks if he actually did the test himself. A child with Down Syndrome in my son’s class could score higher than 6 marks.”
“Maybe his son did it on purpose.”
Some have even suggested that instead of tutoring his son on his own, he should have hired a tutor with academic experience to do it instead.
“I think parents shouldn’t discount the importance of professional tutoring. Honestly, parents may not necessarily understand child development or know how to teach well. Sometimes, it’s not true that you’ll get as much as you put in. He should have left the teaching to professionals.”
