Ever since the retirement of Lee Chong Wei in the badminton scene, many Malaysians were hoping to see younger athletes make their mark on the global stage in competitive badminton, proving once again what Malaysia was truly capable of. And in that vein, local badminton player Li Zii Jia has quickly rose to fame as one of the latest talents to join this enviable group, after winning the All England title since Lee Chong Wei did so back in 2017, in addition to a string of other successes.

And now, Zii Jia will also bear the distinction of being one of the few Malaysian athletes to be featured on New York’s prominent Time Square electronic billboards!

Yesterday, famous sports equipment brand, VICTOR has taken their joy onto their socials sharing that they were honoured to have featured 5 young athletes in the New York Times Square billboard in conjunction with their 55th anniversary.

This includes Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying, Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan, Malaysia’s very own Lee Zii Jia, Denmark’s Anders Antonsen and Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.

According to the company’s Facebook post, the staging of the billboards in New York Times Square wasn’t only to support their 55th anniversary, but also to promote the sport of badminton worldwide.

This announcement comes after Zii Jia was eliminated from the YONEX German Open 2023 to Taiwan’s Chia Hao Lee yesterday (March 9th, 2023). Over the last year, the World No.4 player has been met with much criticism after electing to go without a coach and quitting the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). With that said, he was able to prove his mettle all the same by bringing home both the Asian Championships title and the Thailand Open crown.
